Can my child bring a snack?
Yes. We encourage healthy snacks and a water bottle. I try to keep extra snacks in case a child occasionally forgets. I really appreciate donations of extra snacks, too. When choosing appropriate snacks and drinks to send with your child, it might be helpful to imagine having 25 small children eating and drinking in a carpeted room of your home every day. Thanks for your help with this!
What are the school hours at Duncan Creek?
The school hours are from 8:50a.m. - 3:20 p.m. The earliest students may arrive is 8:20. Car riders will be dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Bus call will begin at 3:20 p.m. Expect your child's bus to drop them off a little late during the first week of school.
What do I do if my child has to miss a day of school?
If your child is sick, please send me a written note when your child returns. Absences will be excused for illness when accompanied by a note. We are no longer able to accept emails for this purpose. Your child will make up his or her work in class or at home depending on the nature of the assignments. Absences for vacation are not excused.
What are the hours for tardies and early check-outs?
Students arriving after 8:50 are tardy. A parent will then have to sign the child in at the front office. If you bring your child to school after 8:50, you must go with them to the office. Students are considered absent if they check-out (and do not return) before 12:10, or if they check-in after 12:10. Students are not allowed to check out after 3:00. This is strictly enforced.
What if my child wants to ride the bus home with a friend?
Transportation changes require a written note. Students must present the note to me first thing in the morning to receive their official bus pass. Please help me by reminding your child to give it to me right away. It is very helpful when parents send me an email letting me know to expect the note. The notes are due to the office by 9:00 A.M. Only students with official bus passes will be allowed to board a different bus.
What about homework?
Your child will bring home a book to read almost every day except Fridays. This is a book we have practiced at school. The book must be returned the next day. Students who forget to bring their books back will use their "oops" for the day on our behavior chart, so it is helpful to plan a routine for keeping up with the books. There is a fee from the Duncan Creek book room if these books are lost.
A homework packet is sent home every Friday in your child's folder. It may be completed at his or her own pace, but it is due by the following Friday. Be aware that some skills may be introduced early the following week, so your child may not be able to complete the entire packet over the weekend. I suggest you help your child learn the routine of nightly homework by completing a little bit each day. First graders should be completing about ten minutes of homework at a time. The homework packet is due on Fridays.
Homework is important for many reasons: (1) It teaches responsibility and time management. This is an invaluable skill that must be taught, modeled, and practiced. (2) It helps your child practice skills that were introduced at school. (3) It allows parents to keep up with what is being taught in class.
